The Iguaçu Falls - Cataratas do Iguaçu

Iguaçu Falls were first seen by Europeans in 1542, when the expedition of Don Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca went down the Iguaçu River with canoes acquired from Kaingang (Guarani), in an attempt to reach the Paraná River. The Falls then received his first name from Western culture: Salto de Santa Maria, however, prevailed even the term adopted by the Guarani: Iguaçu (lots of water). 

The Iguaçu Falls are actually a complex of 275 falls stretching for almost five miles from the Rio Iguaçu. Three quarters of falls are located in Argentina and can be best seen from the brazilian side. 

The Falls are surrounded by national parks of the Atlantic Forest. In Brazil, in the Iguaçu National Park, created in 1939, and in Argentina, the Iguazu National Park. It is an area with rich flora and fauna

About Foz do Iguaçu

 

Foz do Iguaçu has a very interesting and varied ethnic composition, and  is characterized by its cultural diversity. It is estimated today population is 263 508 inhabitants. 

The city is home to about 80 different nationalities. Walking through the city streets is no surprise to come across Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French, Bolivian, Chilean, Arab, Moroccan, Portuguese, Indian, British, Israelis and many other nationalities, even without counting Paraguayans and Argentines. The different ethnic groups residing in the city of Foz do Iguaçu makes it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Brazil.

 Itaipu

The largest dam in the world in power generation and 7th wonder of the modern world is a binational venture between Brazil and Paraguay. Itaipu is responsible for providing 19.3% of all Brazilian energy consumption. This enterprise began in 1974, today, with an installed capacity of 14,000 MW, the world's largest hydroelectric project in its category is an attraction on its own grandeur.

 Bird Park

The Bird Park is a wildlife sanctuary, which combines ecotourism with environmental conservation. Brazilian birds predominate, but there are species from Australia, Africa and Asia represented. Enormous aviaries provide a basic knowledge of about 900 birds and  150 diferent species.

Dreamland  Wax Museum

Who does not want to see some close personalities of film, television, sports, politics and history? This is the experience that the Wax Museum Dreamland brought to Foz do Iguaçu, an immersion in 16 scenarios with dozens of statues that bring the visitor to a fantasy world.

 Dinosaur Valley

Now you can have an experience of being among dinosaurs in Foz do Iguaçu. The Valley of the Dinosaurs is a new tourist attraction in the city, which takes the visitor to a walk outdoors, with animatronic dinosaurs that have 20 movements and sounds.

 Buddhist   Temple

The Buddhist Temple is located in a privileged upper end of the city, where you can have a view of the center of Foz do Iguaçu and Ciudad del Este (Paraguay). The beauty of the place allows closer contact with the Buddhist philosophy, and a time to rest during the trip.

 

The site was built in 1996 and today, the temple grounds there are over 120 statues, each with its meaning, being the highlights, a Buddha statue of 7 meters high, and a temple that creates a very special atmosphere to the site.

Ecomuseum

A visit to the Ecomuseum is a historical and educational experience to complement your visit to the city of Foz do Iguaçu. The museum has a fixed exposure, which depicts the history of Itaipu Dam, and part of the social and ecological history of the region, through portraits, panels, historical pieces and interactive models, and is divided by thematic blocks.

 

The Ecomuseum is the only museum structured as such in the city of Foz do Iguaçu. It has a good structure, a typical experience of museums, and recently underwent a general overhaul. There are also spaces for art and temporary exhibitions, and an external environment, with gardens that complement the experience of the Ecomuseum.

 Three  Borders  Landmark

The Three Borders Landmark is one of the main historical sites of the city of Foz do Iguaçu, where are the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers meet, but more than that, it is where three great nations of South America: Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet. The "Marco" symbolizes some of the reality of the region where the borders are so close and present, who sometimes do not seem to exist.

Opened in 1903, the Three Borders Landmark, is composed of three structures, one in Foz do Iguaçu, one in Ciudad del Este and the other in Puerto Iguazú, and are characterized with the colors of the flag of each country. Knowing the location, you know a little more about the history of the region.

Here also find the amphitheater, Area of the Americas, once one of the most beautiful areas of city events. Its architecture allows the inside of the main hall can see the going down of the sun, and the meeting of the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers.
